Free Spookacular Craft Night Monday 30th October

Halloween and crafts have long gone hand in hand. This year rather than being one of those people who proclaim ‘nah I’m not doing anything for Halloween’, come along to our free craft night and immerse yourself in crafty fun! We’ve got you covered with workshops from making your own spooky lanterns (as designed by Mia) to crocheting a Glow-In-The dark ghost (yes you read that correctly!) with guest tutor Tone Ward or make bejewelled spider brooches with Natasha Steer.

No experience needed, our guest tutors will help you.
All materials provided (though you are always welcome to bring donations for our crafty stash.) Come alone or with friends, it doesn’t matter, everyone is welcome…especially those in costume! We’d love to see themed outfits to enhance our fright night which has a spooky soundtrack provided by DJs The Spinning Yarns.

There’s a bar on site and as usual all workshops work via drop in – doors open at 7.30 and we craft through until 10.30. Just collect your free entry ticket from the Picturehouse Cinema box office when you arrive.

Highlights: #SummerOfLove Craft Night featuring Craftivist Collective and Mind

Summer wouldn't be summer without a festival so we invited Londoners to join us for a special Summer of Love festival themed craft night featuring mindful stitching with the Craftivist Collective, flower power crowns and some seriously groovy recycled earrings. Thanks to everyone who came; it was our busiest night of 2017 so far!
Here's a look at what we got up to...

Introducing the new Craftivists kit...

Craftivist Collective were our special guests for the night. They launched their new craftivism kit, supporting charity Mind. The kit has been created for you to stitch a message to your MP reminding them that they need to keep fighting for mental health support and provisions to be on a par with other health investments. The kits officially launch on September 4th and will cost £12. £7.20 from each kit goes to fund Mind and the vital services they provide, inside is everything you need, so purchase one then and become a crafting change-maker!

Mindful making: Flower Power

Guest tutor for the evening, Bryony Acketts from Blooming Barnets dazzled us with her giant paper of which is bigger than her cat! Crafty lasses flocked to her workshop to make festive floral crowns, here's some of the fabulous creations made on the night.

Recycle and Wear

Mia held a session recycling magazines into jewellery. Everyone loved this project as it was so quick and simple, so gave a sense of craft satisfaction, which is what we like at The Make Escape. The hardest part was deciding which pictures to cut out; we were particularly impressed by the Trainspotting earrings!

Knit & Knatter

Madeline was on hand in our yarn corner, helping to develop your knitting and crochet projects. As ever we had a host of colourful yarns and wool available, and some newbie knitters trying their hand at yarn crafts for the first time.

Sarah Corbett, Founder of Craftivist Collective and volunteers with the Mind team
The lovely ladies from Mind were with us throughout the evening, encouraging you to hold your own #Crafternoon where you can craft with friends, family or colleagues while raising money for Mind. Find more about Crafternoon here.

A big thanks as always to The Spinning Yarns, our Resident DJs who provided the groovy soundtrack.

Momtaz with Make Escape first-timer Natasha who travelled all the way from Kent to come to our night

Don't forget to follow us on social media, we are @TheMakeEscape on Twitter and Instagram.

Our next FREE craft night at The Hackney Attic will be on Monday 30th October, a fright night special and the best Halloween craft night you'll find in London.
From 7:30pm as always, see you then!

Highlights: 5th Birthday #Makerversary

The last Make Escape night at the Hackney Attic was our fifth Birthday Makerversary!

31st May was a night of fun and frolics, with the only theme of the night being celebration!

It was great to meet so many new crafting faces, as well as welcome back our familiar creative friends, some who have been attending since the very first session!

Hygge guru Tone Ward helped crafters create crochet granny squares, teddy bears, and even crocheted bags.

And the knitting corner was a strong as ever, with yarn and conversation aplenty.

Tonertex Foils brought the sparkle and shine to the evening! Michelle actually created this unique embellishing material, and on the night helped our crafters to create dazzling effects on fabric and card.

No party outfit is complete without a statement accessory, and Momtaz was showing everyone how to make fabulous Pompom earrings using clever speedy pompom makers, kindly loaned by Fabrications for the evening.

Resident tutor Mia designed hand-stitched felt coasters, with a foodie theme, perfect  for party! The most popular designs for the attendee makers were the watermelon and the citrus slice. Fruity!

The felt for this workshop was kindly donated by Hobbycraft, Thank you!

As ever we had an array of papers and card for craft
 freestyling, including Birthday cake colouring-in.

To help celebrate the wonderful items made on the evening we had a mini photo booth for your makes, complete with pop up signs featuring the social media tags for the evening.

We saw lots of you pose with a big grin and the 'I made this!' sign, so please do share them, we'd love to see! Tag us on Twitter and Instagram @themakeescape #TheMakeEscape #Makerversary

And no party would be complete without our fabulous DJs The Spinning Yarns, there with a wealth of celebration themed tracks.

They even played 'Happy Birthday' as a cake, featuring the awesome Birthday Flier design by Sally Hughson, was presented!

Its been such a fantastic five years of crafting with you all, here's to the next five!

Our next free event is on 31st July, and the night will be themed on the 'Summer of Love'!

Craft workshops, music and special guest tutors coming your way. Hackney Attic, 270 Mare Street, London, E8.

(Flier design: Sal Hughson)

We are turning 5!!

This month marks FIVE YEARS of The Make Escape FREE CRAFT NIGHT and we are so excited to invite you to join us for an evening of crafting & celebrating. But first can we just take a moment to appreciate our Birthday Flier? It's been designed by Sally Hughson, how awesome is the Paper Yarn she made?

Well you can't have a party without the food! Sew these yummy coasters with our resident Craft Designer and Tutor Mia Vilcins. Make just one, or a set. Our felt stash for this workshop has been kindly donated by Hobbycraft who have all kinds of felt in store, even animal print.

Make pompom earrings with Momtaz
After her recent travels to India where Make Escape Founder Momtaz bought five pairs of pom pom earrings she's got a bit obsessed with them and will be showing you how to make your own pair to brighten up your summer wardrobe. Or if you're not a big of earrings, you can make a bag charm or pom-pom keyring instead.

Learn to crochet with Tone - suitable for beginners

Crochet is one of the coolest crafts there are. You barely need any materials (just a hook and a ball of yarn) and off you go, you can make blankets, cute creatures, clothes, jewellery and bags which is exactly what our Special Guest Tutor Tone Ward, a specialist in Norwegian Hygge, will be teaching. She'll show you how to crochet circles or a classic granny square which you can patch together to make a bag or use as a coaster, or why not frame it as wall art?

Or if you need help with a knitting or crochet project you are working on, bring it along and Tone will help you!

Design birthday cards or DIY your own projects in our Collage Corner with Michelle Huberman, star of craft TV and Founder of Tonertex

This workshop might just revolutionalise your life! Tonertex make glitters and foils which you can use in all your crafts projects. The results are incredible you get really professional super shiny results, it's a bit like magic! Come along to the night to try out foil crafting and glitter crafting for yourself. If there's an occasion coming up that you need to send someone a card for, then you defo need to be there.
