Highlights: Spooktacular Halloween Craft Night

Natasha, Mia, Tone & Momtaz
Last month saw a packed Hackney Attic of costume clad creatives, ready for a night of creepy crafting at our free Halloween craft night.

There was a record number of newbie crocheters who got hooked on hooking, oodles of sparkly glitter for accessory making and we turned coffee jars into clever lanterns. As ever we were joined by The Spinning Yarns DJs behind the decks who treated Make Escapers to eerie sounds and terrifying tunes throughout the night.

If you attended the shenanigans we'd love to see your pics, tag us on social media @TheMakeEscape (Twitter & Instagram). Here's our own pics from the night.
Thanks to everyone who came.

GLOW-IN-THE-DARK CROCHET GHOSTS WITH TONE WARD

When our in-house Crochet Queen Tone Ward suggested running a glow-in-the-dark session we were like wooooaaaah! Really?! Yup! it actually happened! Tone taught a record number of newbies who had never crocheted before to make crochet ghosts with glow sticks inside. Huge congratulations to everyone!

SPARKLY SPIDERS & OTHER EERIE ACCESSORIES WITH NATASHA STEER

Natasha Steer is the creative brains behind Creatabot where she regularly teaches community craft workshops in Kent. Her ethos is the same as ours to make crafts accessible to all and she always values the contribution craft and creativity plays in mental wellbeing. Natasha designed a fun glittery session making spooky but sparkly brooches of bats, spiders and skeletons.

PAPER SHADOW LANTERNS WITH MIA LITTLEWOLF

A London cabbie called Sian messaged us recently and said she had collected lots of glass coffee jars and would we like them? We accepted them instantly! We love receiving donations of craft supplies. Mia designed a clever paper shadow lantern workshop which was our most popular craft session of the night. Thanks Sian!

COLLAGE CORNER

And finally in our free-form collage corner there were some kooky cat masks being conjured up.

Well done crafters!

The Make Escape's Momtaz & Mia

Highlights: #SummerOfLove Craft Night featuring Craftivist Collective and Mind

Summer wouldn't be summer without a festival so we invited Londoners to join us for a special Summer of Love festival themed craft night featuring mindful stitching with the Craftivist Collective, flower power crowns and some seriously groovy recycled earrings. Thanks to everyone who came; it was our busiest night of 2017 so far!
Here's a look at what we got up to...

Introducing the new Craftivists kit...

Craftivist Collective were our special guests for the night. They launched their new craftivism kit, supporting charity Mind. The kit has been created for you to stitch a message to your MP reminding them that they need to keep fighting for mental health support and provisions to be on a par with other health investments. The kits officially launch on September 4th and will cost £12. £7.20 from each kit goes to fund Mind and the vital services they provide, inside is everything you need, so purchase one then and become a crafting change-maker!

Mindful making: Flower Power

Guest tutor for the evening, Bryony Acketts from Blooming Barnets dazzled us with her giant paper flowers...one of which is bigger than her cat! Crafty lasses flocked to her workshop to make festive floral crowns, here's some of the fabulous creations made on the night.

Recycle and Wear

Mia held a session recycling magazines into jewellery. Everyone loved this project as it was so quick and simple, so gave a sense of craft satisfaction, which is what we like at The Make Escape. The hardest part was deciding which pictures to cut out; we were particularly impressed by the Trainspotting earrings!

Knit & Knatter

Madeline was on hand in our yarn corner, helping to develop your knitting and crochet projects. As ever we had a host of colourful yarns and wool available, and some newbie knitters trying their hand at yarn crafts for the first time.

Sarah Corbett, Founder of Craftivist Collective and volunteers with the Mind team
The lovely ladies from Mind were with us throughout the evening, encouraging you to hold your own #Crafternoon where you can craft with friends, family or colleagues while raising money for Mind. Find more about Crafternoon here.

A big thanks as always to The Spinning Yarns, our Resident DJs who provided the groovy soundtrack.

Momtaz with Make Escape first-timer Natasha who travelled all the way from Kent to come to our night

Don't forget to follow us on social media, we are @TheMakeEscape on Twitter and Instagram.

Our next FREE craft night at The Hackney Attic will be on Monday 30th October, a fright night special and the best Halloween craft night you'll find in London.
From 7:30pm as always, see you then!

FREE Summer of Love Craft Night in Hackney, 31st July

It's The Summer of Love baby!

This month it's good vibes all round as we take inspiration from the Summer Season of Festivals for our own 'Craftstock' or 'Craftonbury'!
It will also be a night of conscious crafting, as we have three very special guests joining us for the evening.....

The Line-up:

Become a Craftivist!
Special guests Craftivist Collective in collaboration with charity Mind will be inspiring you to change the world, one stitch at a time. Embroider a powerful slogan, or sew a message to you MP, and become a crafting change-maker.

Mindful making: Flower Power

Bryony Acketts from Blooming Barnets  will be running a special Mind Crafternoon where you can create fabulous flower crowns, to ensure you have a beautiful blooming barnet. An essential festival accessory, and a great way to boost your mental wellbeing. There's nothing quite like a spot of crafting to make you feel better.

Peace Out Pair

Adorn yourself further and make a pair of 'peace out' earrings with Mia.
Use simple materials to make a effortless set of drop earrings. You can even go green and use recycled magazines!

Knit & Knatter

Our usual corner of yarn will be there for you to knit and crochet. Free your inner hippie chick (or chap!) by creating something groovy, man. There's always someone on hand to help you so beginners are always welcome.

Performing on the main stage will be our Resident DJs The Spinning Yarns, playing funky tracks and soulful songs.

Highlights: 5th Birthday #Makerversary

The last Make Escape night at the Hackney Attic was our fifth Birthday Makerversary!

31st May was a night of fun and frolics, with the only theme of the night being celebration!

It was great to meet so many new crafting faces, as well as welcome back our familiar creative friends, some who have been attending since the very first session!

KNIT & KNATTER

Hygge guru Tone Ward helped crafters create crochet granny squares, teddy bears, and even crocheted bags.

And the knitting corner was a strong as ever, with yarn and conversation aplenty.

FOIL FRENZY

Tonertex Foils brought the sparkle and shine to the evening! Michelle actually created this unique embellishing material, and on the night helped our crafters to create dazzling effects on fabric and card.

POMPOM PARADE

No party outfit is complete without a statement accessory, and Momtaz was showing everyone how to make fabulous Pompom earrings using clever speedy pompom makers, kindly loaned by Fabrications for the evening.

SEWING SALON

Resident tutor Mia designed hand-stitched felt coasters, with a foodie theme, perfect  for party! The most popular designs for the attendee makers were the watermelon and the citrus slice. Fruity!

The felt for this workshop was kindly donated by Hobbycraft, Thank you!

COLLAGE CORNER

As ever we had an array of papers and card for craft
 freestyling, including Birthday cake colouring-in.

NEW ADDITION: THE MAKE BOOTH

To help celebrate the wonderful items made on the evening we had a mini photo booth for your makes, complete with pop up signs featuring the social media tags for the evening.

We saw lots of you pose with a big grin and the 'I made this!' sign, so please do share them, we'd love to see! Tag us on Twitter and Instagram @themakeescape #TheMakeEscape #Makerversary

And no party would be complete without our fabulous DJs The Spinning Yarns, there with a wealth of celebration themed tracks.

They even played 'Happy Birthday' as a cake, featuring the awesome Birthday Flier design by Sally Hughson, was presented!

Its been such a fantastic five years of crafting with you all, here's to the next five!

Our next free event is on 31st July, and the night will be themed on the 'Summer of Love'!

Craft workshops, music and special guest tutors coming your way. Hackney Attic, 270 Mare Street, London, E8.
